This mini-workshop focuses on using strong verbs, specific nouns, and descriptive adjectives to make writing more memorable.

We will also work on developing unique similes, metaphors, and juxtapositions to create style that sets the writer apart from others.

Presenter Carolyn J. Rose is the author of Through a Yellow Wood, the long-awaited sequel to Hemlock Lake. Her other novels include An Uncertain Refuge, A Place of Forgetting, and No Substitute for Murder. She penned two humorous cozy mysteries, The Big Grabowski and Sometimes a Great Commotion, with her husband, Mike Nettleton. By the Sea of Regret, the sequel to An Uncertain Refuge, will emerge in the late fall.

She grew up in New York’s Catskill Mountains, graduated from the University of Arizona, logged two years in Arkansas with Volunteers in Service to America, and spent 25 years as a television news researcher, writer, producer, and assignment editor in Arkansas, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington. She founded the Vancouver Writers’ Mixers and is an active supporter of her local bookstore, Cover to Cover. Her interests are reading, gardening, and not cooking.

Presenter Mike Nettleton, author of Shotgun Start and co-author of The Big Grabowski and Sometimes a Great Commotion, grew up in Bandon and Grants Pass, Oregon. A stint at a college station in Ashland led to a multi-state radio odyssey with on-air gigs in Oregon, California, and New Mexico under the air name Mike Phillips. In 1989 he returned to the Northwest and in 1994 joined KEX Radio in Portland. Recently retired, hobbies are golf, pool, Texas hold-em poker, and book collecting. Most recently he’s turned DRUM WARRIOR (Formerly THE HERMIT OF HUMBUG MOUNTAIN) into a screenplay and is busy honing his Academy Awards speech. Or, failing that an acceptance speech for the Ridley Garboon National self-delusion awards to be announced this fall.

There is a $10 class fee to be paid at the beginning of class.
